One of the great things about working from home and being self-employed is the fact that you can select your own hours. You have the power to choose the jobs that you think suit your lifestyle best and can work with your clients to see if your schedule fits well with theirs. Because of this, many people who work from home are able to live the lives they’ve always dreamed of; never needing to miss a family get together, or your child’s first day of school. With the flexibility of working for yourself, you have much more freedom. You may not have health care and have to work a bit harder in the beginning to get yourself out there but in the long run this way of life is great. Whether you decide to work from home as a part time job or you want this to become more of a fulltime thing; here are some tips that have helped me along the way. I think they’ll get you on the right track to success.

Do you recall times where you were called in to work and absolutely had to go even though it meant you missing something very important? Many of us have been there and this is one of the main reasons I decided to change the route my life was going. I wanted to have more control and give myself the freedom that I’d always dreamt of in life.

Personally, I find it extremely helpful to set up a daily schedule so that my work can fit into my life. I try to set up exact times when I need to begin working, when I should take a break, lunch; etc. This may seem a bit strange at first, but the more organized you are, the easier it’s going to be to stay motivated. I always work to get my jobs completed early in the day so I feel accomplished later on and have time to enjoy myself and relax. This gives me much more time with my family and I sleep a lot better knowing everything has been completed.

Another great thing about setting your own schedule is, you can sleep in if you choose to. I know many people who instead of working early in the day, they complete their work later on so they can get their kids off to school and things of that sort. This may just be the best option for you. The best thing to do when starting out is test out a few schedules and see what works best for you. In the beginning, I always thought I did better when working at night because I have trouble waking up early but I was way off. It’s harder to focus when I decided to work later in the day. Sticking to a prepared schedule is the best way to go because it gives you a structure that mimics a ‘real’ job.

At this time, I haven’t selected days that I have off because I want to take most jobs that are sent my way. However, this is something I’ve been thinking about and may discuss with my clients to see if there are certain days we can work around so I can have a full day off.

I hope these little things I’ve learned along the way will help you have a great experience working from home. Remember, it’s a bit strange at first but something I think you’ll truly enjoy.
