When selecting an online job (whether it be full time or part time), it’s always a good idea to think about what it is you’re good at. If you enjoy writing, you can actually get paid to write from the comfort of your home. Sound too good to be true? Many of us thought so in the beginning.

When you first begin looking for work from home jobs online, it’s important to realize that there are a lot of scams out there. Be careful in your selections and don’t expect to make money online for everything you do; at least at first, as you learn the ropes. Everyone has their own way of finding potential clients; and we are going to talk about two of the most popular ones: social networking sites and forums.

There are so many social networking sites but Twitter and Facebook are probably the best two when it comes to promoting yourself and meeting new people. On Facebook, for example; you can search for keywords that are related to what you want to do online. If you want to write articles online, for example, you can type ‘Write Articles’ or ‘Freelance Writer’ and many groups will come up. From there, you can meet people and ask them about how they’re making money. You may even find people who are looking for writers there. You’re going to be surprised how quickly your friends list is going to increase.

It’s a good idea to spread the word. Get your name out there. Make a list of your accomplishments and samples of your work. Even if the topics don’t relate to what potential clients would need you to do, they will be able to see your knowledge and skills. The best way to share these samples is on a blog or a website. There are many free web hosts out there that are great for beginners and blogs such as that look very professional. All the work is basically done for you, so you don’t have to worry about having zero experience.

As for forums, there are an abundance of them at your disposal. Join money making forums or freelance forums and get advice, tips and tricks from the members. Sometimes, even the administrators will give advice to everyone on the site.

I’m not going to lie, this is going to be a time consuming process, but after you put the time in, you are going to meet people who can direct you to individuals who are looking for freelancer to work for them from their homes. Or, you are going to come across websites that have organized areas where you can search for jobs and apply (Like Elance) and/or work the jobs you want to based on a list a company gives to you (such as PaidForumPosting).

No matter where you decide to work and where your journey takes you, it’s a good idea to set up a PayPal account in order to allow individuals to pay you safely. Before signing up for any sites that ask for your Social Security Number, it’s a good idea to check their score with the BBB. Not all sites are going to have a score but it will at least give you the peace of mind knowing you did what you could to verify a site’s trustworthiness.

All in all, there isn’t an exact ‘how-to guide’ for working online because so many people do it differently. Go with your gut, be patient and cautious and jobs will come to you. There are going to be tough times initially but it’s completely worth it in the end.
