Clogged nasal passage, stuffiness, facial tenderness and pain—these may be signs of sinusitis that you’re suffering from! Sinusitis is a common upper respiratory tract infection which is characterized by the inflammation and infection of the sinuses.

A sinus (pl. sinuses) is an airfilled and hollow cavity located in the forehead, cheeks, behind the eyes, and deep within the ethmoids. These sinuses function by humidifying and warming the air, resonating the voice, and buffering the facial structures should there be trauma.

Here are a few methods of getting rid of this condition:

–          Medications. Medicines used in the treatment of sinusitis includes antibiotics to kill the microorganism, decongestants to relieve stuffiness, analgesics for pain relief, mucolytics to liquidate the mucus formation and corticosteroids to reduce inflammation of the nasal passages.

–          Desensitize Your Room/ Dwelling. Many cases of sinusitis are due to allergic response or sensitivity to dust, pollen, germs, etc. Cleaning your home and getting rid of these allergens will greatly lessen the frequency of contracting sinusitis.

–          Steam Inhalation. One of the best home remedies for sinusitis is steam inhalation. This is true, especially with nasal and facial stuffiness. Boil an ample amount of water and add eucalyptus oil. During inhalation, cover your head with a large towel to confine the steam.

–          Warm Compress. Place a warm wash cloth on your face, especially in the cheek bones and above the eyes. The heat will conduct itself towards the sinuses and will promote drainage of the mucus inside.

–          Room Vaporizer/ Humidifier. Placing a vaporizer or humidifier inside your home or room is essential especially if you are suffering from allergic sinusitis. It will also be more effective if you incorporate essential oils like eucalyptus into these humidifiers to make the environment more relaxing and soothing.

–          Nasal Sprays. Nasal sprays are also efficient in treating sinusitis because it clears the nasal passages and facilitates drainage.

–          Hydration. Most importantly, make sure you drink an adequate amount of water, preferably at least 10 glasses each day. This will moisten your sinuses and lead to decongestion.

Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses are infected with harmful microorganisms. These microorganisms may lodge into the sinus and cause mucus formation, leading to clogging of the said areas.

Sinusitis can be an irritating condition, most especially due to the signs and symptoms that it may come with like nasal stuffiness, cough, sore throat and cloudy nasal drainage.

Getting rid of sinusitis is very important before it becomes complicated and takes its toll on your body.
