While sweating at night is normal, night sweats are not. Night sweats are when a person becomes drenched in sweat during the night even when they are not in a warm room. Typically the person will feel hot even when the room is cool and they are taking every step they can in order to cool down.

Causes of Night Sweats

Some of the most common causes of night sweats are Menopause, Idiopathic Hyperhidrosis, Infections, Cancer or Medications. Things like a poor diet, excessive alcohol or caffeine intake as well as high cholesterol can all be triggers.

Menopause affects many areas of the body from emotionally to physically. Changes in the body’s hormones can lead to night sweats either during Menopause or pre-Menopause. Talk to your doctor and they will be able to determine if you are going through Menopause or leading up to it.

Infections and Cancer can cause night sweats. Sweating is the body’s way of fighting off infections (like when you get a fever while you’re sick). Certain bacteria live comfortably at our body’s natural temperature.

As a defense mechanism, the body will increase its internal temperature, leading to excessive sweating. Again, it’s a good idea to get checked out by your doctor to see if there is an infection of some kind leading to your sweating problem.

If you are on medications, these may be leading to your night sweats. Antidepressant medications as well as medications taken to lower fevers can commonly cause more sweating than normal.

As weird as this may sound there is a cause of night sweating that is not yet understood by doctors and that’s Idiopathic hyperhidrosis. There are some people who go through the steps, talk to their doctor and do what they can to cool down; but nothing seems to work. As frustrating as this may sound, many people deal with this on a day to day basis.

Getting Help

Night sweats are a medical condition, and there isn’t anything you can do to stop them until you talk to your doctor, so they can take a look at your medical history in order to figure out which step to take next to get rid of night sweats.

Typically, tests will be done in order to see if there is a medical condition causing your night sweats. All you can really do is take steps to try to cool your body down from the outside for the time being.

If your night sweats are due to poor diet, then you should start eating a more balanced diet in order to get your body back on track. While sweating, your body is trying to get rid of toxins; i.e. the ‘bad food’.

When dealing with Menopause for example, one can drink more water and have a fan on them at night to help them feel more comfortable. The same goes for Cancer patients or those with infections.

All you can really do is try to keep as comfortable as possible while going through the treatment recommended by your doctor. If a medication you are on is causing your night sweats, your doctor may be able to switch you to something else to try to get rid of the problem.
