Hangovers happen; and while not everyone wants to put down the bottle forever, there are steps you can take in order to get rid of your hangover fast and enjoy the rest of your day.

What Causes Hangovers

Hangovers can vary in severity, but they basically all contain similar components. First off, alcohol dehydrates your body; so you are probably feeling very thirsty as well as tired because your body had to work increasingly hard to try to break down the alcohol.

Of course, the more you drink, the longer this is going to take and the more severe your hangover will be. You are probably experiencing a splitting headache which is commonly associated with being dehydrated or your body being overworked.

Then, there’s the fun part; the nausea. This is due to the intensity of the alcohol that has irritated your stomach. No worries though, because there are plenty of things you can do to get back to feeling normal again.

Get Rid Of A Hangover/Ways To Prevent One

When trying to get rid of a hangover or prevent one; there are a few things you can do.

First off, be sure to hydrate well before, during and after you drink. This way your body isn’t bombarded with as much alcohol and is able to break it down quicker. Eating is also important. It’s best to not only eat before drinking but a little bit during and after.

You don’t need to eat a huge meal or anything; even simple things like crackers will do, allowing some of the alcohol to be absorbed.

I know you don’t feel very good and all you can think about is sleeping but it’s a good idea to stay up for at least a few hours after drinking so your body can digest everything and start recovering. This will also give you that extra time you need to make sure you’re hydrated.

Listen to your body, if you are feeling nauseas; be careful when drinking water or eating. Take it easy and cover up with a nice warm blanket. Alcohol lowers your body’s internal temperature making you more susceptible to getting sick.

While I’m sure many of you know this already; it’s very important not to mix pain killers with alcohol. You may have a terrible headache but mixing the two puts extra stress on your liver which is no good. Trust me, it’s worth the wait.

Once You’ve Slept It Off

After you’ve waited it out a bit and done everything you can to stay comfortable and relaxed; it’s okay to start taking something to help with the left over symptoms (if you have any). Be sure you read the instructions on medications before taking them. Tylenol, Ibuprofen or Alka-seltzer are great products that will get you on the track to feeling much better as long as the alcohol has left your system.

Taking a shower; hydrating some more, having a snack and then resting some more should be at the top of your to-do list for the day. Exercising is going to help you get excess toxins out of your body and showering afterwards will help wash them away. Foods like bananas, apples and honey are great for getting your sugar levels back to normal and building up some antioxidants (Gatorade is great as well as it makes up for the lost sodium; helping you bounce back faster).
