Many people are writing books these days and selling them online. While it used to be perfectly fine to simply have your book in a PDF file for customers to download, it’s a good idea to use the Apple iBookstore as well so you can increase the amount of exposure your book gets.
The more people who hear about your book, the better your chances of having people purchase. Below, I am going to discuss two ways you can go about doing this. The first way is a bit tougher, but will definitely bring much more money in. While, the second option is much more simple; and doesn’t bring in quite as much cash in the long run.
For those of you who are using a Mac computer, you will need operating system 10.5 or higher. If you’re using a Windows computer then you are going to need conversion software because the end product needs to be placed in an EPUB (Electronic Publications) file. If you’re unsure how to go about converting your E-Book into the correct file format, you can use the free software called Calibre. You are also going to need to purchase an ISBN number for your book title. This is going to cost you about $25.
Also, you are going to need an iTunes account that has a credit card on file. (To download iTunes, go here and then go to Choose Store and Create Account) In order to sell your iBook, you’re going to need your US tax ID, which can either be your social security number or EIN. If you do not have one; you must obtain one from the IRS. (Even non-US residents can do this).
After all that is finished, it’s time to sign up for iTunes Connect. From there you can upload your iBook and begin selling. Keep in mind; you must be approved before you can begin selling.
Now it’s time for option number two. This is a great option for those of you looking to get your book on the Apple iBookstore quickly without all the hassle. Let’s face it, not all of us have the time or patience it takes to go through each of the steps I talked about above.
Once you’ve converted your book to its EPUB format, you can then go through one of the iBookstore Aggregators. These are going to do a lot of the work for you including getting your ISBN number, convert your documents for you and helping you meet the standards required in order to become approved much faster and start selling your E-Book. From there, you’re going to be walked through the whole process with your iBookstore Aggregator of your choosing.
Just to further explain this, I’m going to talk to you a little bit about the popular option, Lulu. Currently, Lulu is offering free conversion support and they are an amazing option when it comes to distributing your E-Book to all the major retailers. Any money you receive from your E-Book will be sent to you via your Lulu account; where everything is kept close track of so you can keep up with everything related to your earnings.
Keep in mind, when selling an E-Book on Apple; Apple keeps 30% of the money you earn. If you choose to use Lulu to help you during the whole process, they are going to get 20% of your revenue. This is a factor to keep in mind because if you go with this option, you aren’t going to be making as much money as you would if you did it alone.
