How To Get Rid Of Dry Spots?

What Causes Dry Patches

Dry patches occur when the stratum corneum (the surface layer of skin) becomes dry. The purpose of this skin layer is to keep moisture within the body. If the stratum corneum becomes too dry, it’s unable to retain the moisture your body needs.

Certain chemicals, extreme heat or cold and age are common factors for this problem. Dry patches can also be a result of skin disease. So, how do you get rid of dry spots?

Since your stratum corneum isn’t moisturized as it’s meant to be; you need to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. There are a few ways to do this. The simplest way is to drink plenty of water. Not only is this going to help your skin but it’s great for your body’s overall functionality as well.

Of course, you can also use moisturizing lotions as well but it’s best to try to moisturize from the inside-out first because simply applying lotions to the skin can seem like they’re helping when in all actuality, they can be masking the problem.

Once you stop using lotion, you may just be left with the same problem you’ve set out to fix.

Invest in a humidifier. Oftentimes, our homes become overly dry and when we are constantly leaving the house and exposing our bodies to extreme changes in temperature; this can leave us with dry/flaky skin. If you want to simplify this idea a bit, you can even boil water on the stove.

This will increase the moisture levels in the air; helping you get rid of dry spots faster.

Things To Avoid

While I understand how great hot showers and baths feel; these are not good for dry skin. Honestly, they’re not good for your skin at all.

Warm is the perfect temperature. Also, when washing dry skin; avoid using soap because this is just going to dry out your skin further and may lead to cracking and breaking of the skin which is something you want to avoid.

Instead, use products that moisturize your skin and contain healing properties. Brands such as Garnier, Olay or Dove are very popular among people with dry skin.

Doctor’s Orders

If nothing seems to be working, you may want to see your doctor. You could be suffering from some sort of skin disorder. If this is the case, medication may be prescribed.

Depending on the severity of your case, this treatment may be as simple as a cream which you apply to your dry areas of skin.
