While the word addiction typically reminds people of addictions to substances such as alcohol or illegal drugs; virtually anything can become addicting.
Two ways to figure out if you are addicted to something or not is if you get withdrawals when you don’t use (or do) something, and you build up a tolerance to it; meaning you need more of it in order to get the same effects you did in the beginning.
Am I addicted to Coca Cola?
Do you drink a lot of Coca Cola? Not only is pop unhealthy for you but it contains a lot of sugar and caffeine that commonly leads to addiction. Certain chemicals that are in sugar and caffeine can mimic the brain’s naturally produced chemicals.
When the brain picks up on these mimicking chemicals, they are either told to produce a larger amount of chemicals; or a lower amount. As you can imagine, this alters with your whole body’s way of working; leaving everything out of whack.
As you drink more and more Coca Cola, your body builds up a tolerance to it. When this happens, you will feel the need to drink even more in order to get the good feeling that previously came along with drinking a Coke.
If you’re ever had a day where you drank less, or if you’ve tried to stop drinking Coca Cola and experienced withdrawal symptoms; you are definitely addicted. Such symptoms can include but aren’t limited to: lack of motivation, fatigue, headaches, irritability, inability to concentrate and so forth.
As you can see, addition is addiction; no matter what it is you’re addicted to. Everybody’s different and addiction can hit some of us harder than others.
Get rid of your addiction
It’s never too late to get rid of Coca Cola Addiction. The most important thing you can do is have patience. Realizing you have a problem is the first and most important step, while allowing yourself time to cope.
Take yourself seriously. You know your body and no matter what other people may think or society may tell you; you are addicted.
Now, it’s time to figure out why it is you want to quit. Drinking things with excess sugar can not only lead to many serious health problems in the future but can also hinder your life on a day to day basis.
If you require sugar in order to even get out of bed in the morning, or become distracted because all you can think about is the next time you can get some Coca Cola; you could end up losing friends and family members.
You are probably going to end up with a bloated feeling much of the time and feel very tired from all the sugar-high crashes. Does sound like a very high quality of life, does it?
Take the process one day at a time. You cannot get rid of Coca Cola Addiction overnight. Simple things like not finishing the entire bottle, and then weaning off to a sugar free version are going to make major improvements in your life.
You’ll start to feel like yourself again; more energetic, emotionally stable and so forth. Getting to the point where you can avoid sugar and caffeine altogether and not become emotional is the ultimate goal but there’s sugar in so many products today that this can be very hard to accomplish.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
If nothing seems to be working, don’t be afraid to speak up. Your doctor can help give you advice and alternative drinks such as teas; that will help fill the void until you are completely over the addiction.
There are many addiction groups out there, for all sorts of addictions and being educated about addiction is what will help you fight this most effectively. There are also tablets that can be taken that take the place of the sugar and caffeine in Coke (depending on what it is you’re addicted to; in many cases, it’s both) that will help you beat your cravings and effectively quit.
Ultimately, water is the best drink and if that were all you were to ever consume, you would feel a lot better overall.
